Your Wakefield Wedding Photographer

About Me

Hi, I’m Ross Wilson, the photographer behind Black Hat Photography. Based in the heart of West Yorkshire, I specialise in capturing the raw emotion and beauty of weddings throughout Wakefield and beyond. I’ve always had a passion for storytelling, and for me, there’s no better way to tell a story than through the art of photography.

My approach to wedding photography is all about creating natural, timeless images that reflect the unique personalities of each couple. I believe in capturing moments as they unfold, allowing you to relive your special day with authenticity and emotion. From the anticipation in the morning to the joy and excitement of the evening, I strive to document every beautiful moment, big or small.

Having worked with a variety of couples at different venues across Barnsley, I’ve developed an understanding of how to make the most of every location—whether it's a grand venue, a countryside retreat, or a more intimate, personal setting. I take great pride in tailoring my photography to suit the essence of each wedding, ensuring that your day is reflected in every shot.

When I’m not behind the camera, you can find me exploring the stunning landscapes of Yorkshire, experimenting with long exposure photography, or enjoying a quiet camping trip under the stars. These personal passions not only inspire my wedding work but also help me connect with couples who share a love for nature and adventure.

I’d be honoured to be part of your wedding day and help capture memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re looking for a relaxed, professional photographer who genuinely cares about making your day perfect, I’d love to chat about your wedding plans.

A Little About Me…

I have a deep love for the outdoors, particularly climbing mountains in the stunning Lake District. There’s something truly special about the challenge of reaching a peak and soaking in the breathtaking views—rolling hills, glistening lakes, and rugged terrain stretching for miles. The fresh air, the sense of accomplishment, and the peaceful solitude of nature are what draw me back to the fells whenever I can. Wild camping in remote corners and coastal walks offer a perfect escape from the noise of everyday life and allow me to recharge.

That said, I also value quieter moments—whether it’s unwinding with Paula after a busy day or watching Lewis discover the world around him. These precious family moments balance my adventurous spirit and remind me of what truly matters.

I’m also someone who enjoys indulging in great food, exploring new cultures, and sipping a fine whisky on the rocks. Life, for me, is about finding that perfect balance—between thrilling adventures, cherished family time, and peaceful evenings spent at home.

This love for both adventure and serenity shines through in my photography. Whether I'm capturing the grandeur of a wedding day or exploring the beauty of a landscape, I approach each shot with the same sense of passion and dedication that drives my love for the outdoors and family life.

  • Wild Camp helvellyn

    Escape.

When I’m not shooting a wedding, editing the last, or planning for the next, I’m heading into the mountain to catch the cool breeze. I like to avoid the masses for some me-time unwinding from day to day life.

  • Wild Camping.

A real passion of mine is wild camping. Grabbing my tent, sleeping bag and stove, and heading out of town. Whether it be hills, mountains, or coastal; just finding that perfect spot to catch a sunrise, set, or a sky filled with stars is what makes me happy.

  • Scarborough steps

    Watch.

Another passion of mine is landscape and fine art photography. Whether it be modern buildings in cities or a trip to capture a high tide by the coast.
